I saw this quote on Only Poems recently by David Kirby:
The mind of a poet is one that collects anything that might be useful, even if its use is not apparent at the time.
I love this quote and it speaks to me as a compulsive observer. In fact, I have always felt that I was built to be a bit more of an old-fashioned naturalist or animal behaviorist rather than a ‘modern’ scientist because my skills of pure observation are one of my biggest strengths. This quote also supports my treasure trove of weird animal facts that live in my brain rent-free. It generally supports relentless curiosity, which I think is a great trait for anyone and everyone.
What I like about this quote in relation to poetry is that an unexpected connection in a poem can create a ‘shimmer’ or ‘brain tickle’ that is really pleasing and thought-provoking. Such a connection can take a poem from good to great. But in order to make such a connection or write such a poem, the writer needs to be able to draw upon a vast variety of, well, everything.
Keep noticing.
